BLANDFORD Bloodstock emerged as second top purchaser at the December Foal Sale, which concluded yesterday (November 28).

The Newmarket-based agency signed for 12 lots at the four-day auction at a combined cost of 981,000gns.

With trade very healthy at Park Paddocks, Blandford made no less than five six-figure purchases - four of whom were colts.

But the top-priced of their buys was a Hurricane Run half-sister to Lillie Langtry who was knocked down for 170,000. Lillie Langtry, out of an unraced Darshaan mare, is high in the betting for next year’s 1000 Guineas after winning both the Group 2 Debutante Stakes and the Group 3 Coolmore Stud Sprint Stakes in 2009.

The highest-priced colt landed by Blandford was by first-crop stallion Teofilo out of a Hector Protector mare from an extended family that is full of ‘black type’. Lot 746 realised 165,000gns before the hammer went down to the Blandford team. That was the highest figure paid last week for progeny of the unbeaten Dewhurst Stakes winner Teofilo.

The first foals to sell by brilliant Derby winner Authorized also attracted plenty of attention and Blandford secured the most expensive of his colts that went under the hammer at the sale.

From the Castlebridge consignment out of an unraced Red Ransom mare, Blandford went to 135,000 gns for Lot 756 who has a clutch of stakes winners in his extended family including talented two-year-old Arctic who won a Group 3 in Ireland this year.

Blandford also signed the ticket for an own brother to another smart 2009 performer in Ireland. Johan Zoffany won half of his six starts as a three-year-old for trainer Aidan O’Brien and the latest sales offering by the Galileo-Belle Allemande combination fetched 130,000gns.

The final six-figure buy by the Blandford pair of Tom Goff and Richard Brown was a colt by Danehill Dancer out of a Sadler’s Wells pair. He made 125,000 before being kncoked down.
